The Hunger Games cake

The Hunger Games

Many people have a hunger for good books...and a hunger for good cake goes without saying!  My son is an avid book reader and The Hunger Games series is high on his list of favorites at the moment.  I must admit, I haven't had a chance to read the series yet, and had to rely on my son's input on relevant symbolism that might be interesting to include on the cake.  He was a great help!   I felt huge relief, when one of the party-goers at my son's birthday ran over to the cake and exclaimed excitedly "Look! There are the backpacks at the Cornucopia!"   (I was a bit concerned they looked like double-handled coffee mugs).    For those of you hunger games fans, I hope you recognize my version of weaponry, the cornucopia, "nightlock berries", a loaf of french bread...and...the Mocking Jay!

  1. This is beautiful!!!! I am so impressed. Did you use a template for the symbol on the book? Or just free hand cut it?

  2. Thank you! I made a paper template for the outline (printed a copy of the symbol off the computer) and cut it out carefully, then did all free-hand details. To be honest, I wish I had made the arrow thinner, but otherwise it turned out well! Thank you so much for your comments!

  4. This cake is amazing! My daughter is a huge fan of The Hunger Games and I would love to get one made for her birthday in May if that is possible. Where are you based?

    1. Thank you Helen! I actually just do cakes for fun, not as a business, at least not yet! I am in Canada...not sure where you are! If you are far away, I could give you some tips on how to make something similar? I'm happy to help you however I can!

    2. I'm in England! Honestly, I would be hopeless at making a cake but thank you very much for offering to help, and thank you for your reply.

  5. England...oh dear! I suppose that is a bit too far for me to come by and help you out! ;-) I certainly don't mind if you take my photo to a bakery and ask them to do something similar... I hope it works out to get something for your daughter! And thanks for your lovely compliment!

  6. This is a really cool cake. I'm doing a Hunger Games cake for my local 4-H fair to enter for 'crafts' and seeing your cake helped me get a little inspiration for it.
